Windshield Repair Cost and Replacement Quote Extras

See a $75 chip-repair example, calculate additional chips, and compare replacement quotes with taxes, moldings, calibration and insurance handled separately.

A windshield chip can cost far less to repair than a windshield costs to replace, but repairability comes before the price comparison. Damage size, location and the vehicle’s cameras or sensors affect the decision. A repair quote and a replacement quote therefore answer different questions until the installer assesses the glass.

The October 2026 examples below use providers’ own prices and policies. The chip price belongs to one Washington shop; the replacement calculations use explicit assumptions rather than a national average. Compare the final amount for the vehicle, including calibration and excluded charges, instead of treating a glass-only advertisement as the total.

Key figures

  • $75 Good Dog Auto Glass, first chip repair
  • $90 Two eligible chip repairs, same day
  • $105 Three eligible chip repairs, same day

A named chip-repair offer starts at $75

Good Dog Auto Glass in Renton advertises $75 for the first chip repair and $15 for each additional repair on the same day. Its page lists a 30-minute wait. Those details provide a local planning example, subject to the shop accepting the damage for repair, rather than a promise that every chip can be repaired at that price.

Same-day repair countCalculation from provider menuTotal
One accepted chipFirst repair$75
Two accepted chips$75 + $15$90
Three accepted chips$75 + $15 + $15$105

The marginal cost of the second or third accepted repair is $15, not another $75. A quote for multiple chips should say whether the first-repair charge repeats or an additional-chip rate applies. Do not assume this shop’s policy applies to a different installer or a later visit.

The maintenance budget guide distinguishes glass damage from routine scheduled service. A chip is an unexpected repair, while setting aside money for it is a budgeting choice rather than a maintenance interval.

Repair limits determine whether the lower price applies

Safelite publishes conditions under which it can usually repair a windshield: damage under 6 inches long, a point of impact smaller than a dime, no more than three chips, and no blocked camera or sensor. The word “usually” matters because the technician still assesses the location and condition. These are its service criteria, not a universal guarantee from every installer.

A fourth chip therefore should not simply be priced by extending another company’s additional-chip formula and assuming Safelite will repair all four. Likewise, a short crack in a camera area can fail the location criterion even when it meets the length limit. The vehicle and damage assessment determine whether the repair price is available.

Ask the installer what result to expect visually and what its warranty does if the damage spreads. Good Dog advertises $100 off replacement if the chip spreads or the customer dislikes the repair’s appearance. That is a replacement credit under its terms, not a promise of a free new windshield or a refund of every related expense.

Replacement quotes separate glass, calibration and fees

Safelite says its quote includes glass and labor, while tax, required moldings and other fees can be additional. Ask the installer to confirm the vehicle’s installed equipment and whether camera recalibration is required by the manufacturer’s procedure. A replacement that leaves required work for another appointment needs that cost and timing shown in the comparison.

For a hypothetical example, glass and installation at $600 plus assumed recalibration at $300 total $900 before tax and fees. Another assumed $750 glass quote is not necessarily more expensive if it already includes the same required $300 calibration, whereas the $600 headline excludes it. Both quotes must describe the finished job.

Ask whether the glass matches the vehicle’s required features and whether moldings, disposal, mobile service and calibration reporting are included. “Same model” is not enough when different trims have different equipment. A lower estimate can still be good value, but the installer needs to explain what is being supplied and what remains.

This photograph shows windshield cleaning, not a completed chip repair or calibration. The quote should identify the repair and vehicle equipment separately.

Discounts and insurance change different parts of the bill

Safelite advertises a 10% discount for eligible military, AAA, AARP and first-responder customers, with eligibility verification. Its cost page excludes recalibration and says the offer cannot be applied to insurance claims or deductibles. The discount should therefore be calculated on eligible self-pay work rather than the entire repair-order total.

Using the assumed $600 glass-and-labor line above, a 10% reduction is $60, leaving $540. Add the assumed $300 excluded calibration and the result is $840 before other charges. Applying 10% to the whole $900 would instead produce $810, overstating the saving by $30 in this example. The figures illustrate the published exclusion; they are not a Safelite vehicle quote.

Good Dog says it does not process insurance for chip repairs but will provide an invoice for a reimbursement request. Reimbursement still depends on the customer’s policy and insurer. Paying the shop first and requesting reimbursement later differs from a provider billing an insurer directly, and neither arrangement establishes a universal zero-dollar deductible.

The higher-deductible guide explains the broader cash-cost comparison. Check the glass provision and claim terms for the policy instead of assuming its collision deductible governs every windshield service.

Appointment timing includes the drive-away instruction

A replacement appointment and the time when driving is permitted are different. Safelite says replacement often takes 60 minutes or less, but recommends at least an hour without driving after the service. The installer should give the vehicle’s drive-away instruction for the adhesive and conditions; the end of the installation is not automatically the departure time.

For planning only, an assumed 60-minute installation followed by a 60-minute wait occupies about two hours after work begins. Add check-in, assessment and any calibration rather than promising a two-hour total for every visit. Confirm whether mobile work has space, weather or other requirements at the chosen location.

Visibility and sensors come before a cheap repair

Arrange professional assessment when glass damage obstructs visibility or affects a camera or sensor, and follow the installer’s drive-away instructions. A low chip price does not establish that repair or continued driving is safe.

Retain the repair order with the glass supplied, work performed, calibration report when required, warranty and payment breakdown. The roadside-plan guide covers recovery if the vehicle cannot be driven to the appointment. That transport charge is separate from the installer’s glass quote.

Questions people ask

How much does repairing two chips cost in the example?

Good Dog's same-day menu gives $75 for the first accepted repair plus $15 for another, totaling $90. Confirm that both qualify and whether other charges apply.

Can every short windshield crack be repaired?

No. Size is only one condition. Location, impact size, chip count, camera or sensor obstruction and the installer's assessment affect eligibility.

Does a glass quote include recalibration?

Ask explicitly. The estimate should identify required calibration and whether its price, appointment and reporting are included in the finished replacement.

Does Safelite's 10% discount reduce a deductible?

Its published eligible-group offer excludes insurance claims and deductibles, and also excludes recalibration. Confirm eligibility and calculate it only on covered self-pay lines.
